Adrian Maher Takes the Cash

Rain brings early end to Title night 10/01/09

Rain bought an early end to the V8 NSW Modified title after the completion of 2 rounds of heats. The night was shaping up to a great finale with the early heats displaying the fast and close racing the modifieds are known for.

The early heats revealed the usual suspects were at the front with Andrew Pezutti, Scott Cannon, Tony Sneddon and Peter Britten winning. Placegetters included Andrew Drake, Jai Stephenson, Mark Robinson and Darren Latimer. Negotiatons are underway to reschedule for a later date.

Congratulations go to the track staff for attempting to "get the track back"  however a second shower made it impossible to continue. Thanks also to the drivers who wheel packed in very difficult circumstances. Although it did seem a couple really enjoyed it.

The first Gunnedah outing by the NOS Sprintcars certainly caused some interest. Although small in number their presentation and performance ensured that they will be invited back.

The Street Stocker numbers were swelled by some late entries with Bruce Smith and Dave Hamilton winning and Errol Carter and John Philp taking 2nd and 3rd in both heats.

The Fender Benders also had their best roll up for a long time. One Commodore unfortunately ended up looking more like a Corolla after being piledriven in the rear straight (don't you hate it when that happens). The resultant fuel spill was cleaned up by our track crew (see Gallery).

The very popular 4 cylinders also put on a good show with a couple of Siggys showing the way early.

Don't forget to check the gallery pages.

Don't miss next month's meeting when we have the V8 Super Sedans, Modified Production Sedans, Formula 500s and all supports.

NSW V8 Dirt Modified Title

The running of the 2008/09 season New South Wales (NSW) V8 Dirt Modified Title is to be fought out this Saturday night (January 10) and a stellar field is set to converge on the speedway to take the crown away from defending champion Andrew Pezutti from Queensland.

Last season’s NSW Title saw Pezutti defeat Luke Oldfield and Alan Jarvis. So far this season Pezutti has had mixed results and he is no doubt looking to successfully defend the NSW Title. The last occasion Pezutti visited the Gunnedah Speedway track was over 10 years ago when he drove the Fred Cox owned Sprintcar.

Pezutti’s main challengers for the NSW Title are the likes of former Australian Champion Mark Robinson, Luke Oldfield and Queensland ace Peter Britten. Britten is certainly one driver worth watching out for and has so far been in good form and would love nothing more than to add a NSW Title to his list of achievements.

You cannot discount drivers such as Singleton based hard charger Tony Sneddon, Darren Latimer, Simon Jupe, youngster Alan Jarvis, Rian Collier, and newcomer to the V8 Dirt Modified ranks Rob Hamilton. Added to the field are the returns of former Australian Champions Scott Cannon and John Brown. The Newcastle based drivers have spent time this season in other classes of Speedway with Cannon sampling Sprintcars and Brown steering his Super Sedan.

Victorian drivers Steven Milthorpe, Murray Atkin and Aaron Trotter shouldn’t be discounted in regards to being NSW Title contenders amongst the field of mainly NSW and Queenslanders.

V8 Dirt Modified’s are regarded as one of the most spectacular forms of Speedway classes in Australia and are primed to put on a show this Saturday night at Gunnedah Speedway.

The last occasion the V8 Dirt Modified appeared here was back in the 2001/02 season when the NSW Title was held at the venue and was won by Kevin Hopwood who ended up defeating Mark Robinson and Tony Sneddon.

Making their first appearance of the 2008/09 season at Gunnedah Speedway is the NOS Sprints. The NOS Sprints are Sprintcar chassis’ without wings and they are powered by standard V6 engines. The drivers to put on a show at the front of the field include Mitch Chapman, Mark Garey, Jon McCorkindale, Karl Skelton and a host of others.

Supporting the NSW Title action are the ‘Ford VS Holden’ Street Stocks, 2 Litre Sedans, Junior Sedans, and the ‘Crash and Bash’ Fender Benders.

Junior Quarter Midgets

Gunnedah Speedway hosted the first meeting of the season for the young guns of Junior Quarter Midgets in NSW on December 6th. The youngest boy, Kemble Walsh number 99 lead the field of 120cc drivers out onto the track for thier first event for the day, 10yr old Jayke Brien 63, wasted no time gaining the lead and held it for almost half the race before local Gunnedah boy Clayton Small 91, momentarialy took the lead and the charge was on. Jayke managed to take back control, finishing 1st with Clayton second , Kemble 3rd and the only girl, Ellie Small Number 5, taking 4th place.
Heat 2 started with brother and sister, Clayton and Ellie starting side by side, with Jayke and Kemble close behind. Ellie made sure the boys would have to work hard if they were to take her off the podium and charged, lap after lap keeping them at bay, evenually Jayke Brien gathered the momenum and made the charge to take the lead once again, with Ellie in second followed by Clayton then Kemble in 4th.
Heat 3 gave Jayke pole position with Kemble sticking close beside him, first lap in and Clayton made his move taking up second spot , Kemble held onto to third position untill a mechanical mishap forced him to retire early giving 3rd place to Ellie Small.
The 160cc big guns headed out for thier first heat with NSW 1 Mitch Brien leading the field , Ben Wright in car 2 didn't let Mitch get too far away and sat on his tail all the way. Ben's sister Rylee Walsh car 6 hadn't run for a while and took the opportunity to practice her skills before mixing it with the boys. Mitch took out 1st with Ben 2nd and Rylee 3rd.
Heat 2 began with Ben infront off Mitch and the chase was on, Ben held Mitch out for the first few laps until mitch wound it up and made the charge taking a comfortable 1st place again with Ben not too far behind and Rylee finishing in third position.
Heat 3 and it was Rylee's turn to lead the boys out onto the field.Mitch once again pushed the pedal to the metal and gained control of the race with Ben and Rylee chasing in 2nd & third, the race would end in these positions.
Brien brothers, Jayke and Mitch, cleaned up at the presentation as they were both awarded 1st place overall point score winners due to the heavens opening up just before the feature races, causing the remainder of the meeting to be cancelled.
Clayton Small 91 taking 2nd, and Ellie Small car 5 in 3rd ,with Kemble car 99 taking home 4th place for the 120cc. Ben Wright awarded 2nd , and Rylee Walsh awarded 3rd for the 160cc class. Alhough their day was cut short due to the rain, a great day was had by all and they can't wait to battle it out again at the beautifully prepared track, thanks to Barry Towers and his team at Gunnedah Speedway. We are all looking forward to our next meeting here on January 10th 2009.

In what was an entertaining night of action, the fifth and penultimate round of the Thunder through the Plains NSW Country Sprintcar Series was run and won on Saturday night (April 18) at Gunnedah Speedway (North Western NSW) with the victory spoils going to Adrian Maher.

Maher was able to romp to victory lane for the first occasion in the Thunder through the Plains NSW Country Series, with his previous best result being a third place finish during the second round earlier this season, and defeat the Dubbo based pairing of Jeremy Cross and Mark Blyton in second and third place respectively on the podium. Despite the best efforts of both Cross and Blyton they were no match for a dominant Maher.

Just outside the podium finishes was Maher’s Loudoun Family Motorsport team-mate, Ian Loudoun in fourth place and he was followed by Thunder through the Plains NSW Country Series leader heading into the round Stuart Williams in fifth and in sixth place was a recovering James Thompson.

Earlier in the feature race an incident involving pace setters Glen Saville, James Thompson and Kelly Linigen unfortunately eliminated both Saville and Linigen from contention. While battling for the lead of the feature race Saville and Thompson made contact and that resulted in Thompson spinning and a closely following Linigen made contact with Saville and rolled over. The crash eliminated Linigen while Thompson was able to restart at the tail of the field and Saville maintained his spot at the front of the field for the restart only for him to pull to the infield with a flat left rear tyre just before the race was about to get back underway.

Once the wreckage of Linigen’s was removed from the Gunnedah Speedway track and when Saville dropped out, Maher inherited the feature race lead, after he had started from position 11 in the field, and from there he was never headed for the remainder of the 25-lap distance.

“My car was perfect in the feature race as we had plenty of speed and ended up taking out a great win,” stated a jubilant Maher. “I started out of position 11 in the feature race due to knocking out the front end [of the car] earlier in the night during the dash and I was very determined to make amends and that was exactly what we managed to do. We were pretty lucky to miss the crash early on in the feature race as we were just behind the three of them [Saville, Thompson and Linigen] when it happened but thankfully managed to steer to clear of it.”

By virtue of his second place finish on the podium, Cross has now moved into the lead of the Thunder through the Plains NSW Country Series point standings ahead of previous leader Williams with only one round remaining.

The second annual Greta Smith Memorial for the Street Stocks resulted in youngster John Lodge Jnr taking out the victory and he managed to defeat defending champion Kevin Keeler and John Edmunds. Pre race favourites, Tony Brown and Brett Mitchell, didn’t fare too well. Brown was sent to the ROF during the race while running up at the pointy end of the field and Mitchell recorded a DNF due to a mechanical issue while in a similar position on the track.

In the support classes, the feature race wins were shared between Dave Partridge (2 Litre Sedans), Andrew Smith (Junior Sedans) and Keith Urquhart (Fender Benders).

Gunnedah Speedway is proud to announce that they raised close $2,000 to donate to breast cancer awareness on Saturday night and they would like to say thanks to everyone for their generous donations.

The final race meeting of the 2008/09 season at Gunnedah Speedway is to be the re-running of the NSW V8 Dirt Modified Title and the Country Cup for the 2 Litre Sedans plus supports and the date for this race meeting is to be advised.
